Aurora City Center AR Trail: See History Come Alive
-
Introduce the AR trail that allows users to point their smartphones at historic buildings and see historical images, facts, and stories. Mention how to access the trail (via the app or web), key stops, and the partnership with the local historical society.

Step into the past without leaving the present! Downtown Aurora is thrilled to launch the Aurora City Center Augmented Reality (AR) History Trail. This innovative experience uses your smartphone to overlay historical images and narratives onto today’s cityscape.
How It Works:
-
Download the free ‘Aurora Augmented’ app from the App Store or Google Play.
-
Head to the starting point at the Aurora History Museum (or any of the 15 trail markers).
-
Open the app and point your camera at the designated building or marker.
-
Watch as the screen transforms, showing you a historical photograph, listening to stories from the past, and reading about the people and events that shaped our community.
Highlights of the Trail:
-
The Old Aurora Hotel: See the bustling hotel as it stood in 1910, complete with horse-drawn carriages.
-
The Fox Theatre: Catch a glimpse of the marquee from its opening night in 1946.
-
The Trolley Car Turnaround: Witness the electric trolleys that once connected Aurora to Denver.
This project is a collaboration between the City of Aurora, the Aurora Historical Society, and local tech students from the Community College of Aurora. It’s designed to educate, engage, and inspire both residents and visitors.
Plan Your Visit:
The trail is available 24/7 and is completely free. We recommend starting at the Aurora History Museum to pick up a complementary trail map, or you can download the map from our website.
Come explore the layers of Aurora’s history in a whole new way!
